Founded in 1956, Beijing Tian Tan Hospital, Capital Medical University, a quaternity consisting of medical treatment, scientific research, medical education and disease prevention, is a large upper first-class general hospital with the characteristic of neuroscience especially associated with neurosurgery serving as a precursor. Through hard work and strenuous efforts for more than half a century, the hospital has already achieved leap-and-bound development and ascended into the top-level hospitals in China in terms of medical technology and hospital fame.

There are over 30 clinical departments and 11 adjunct departments at present in hospital equipped with various advanced medical equipments, and furthermore, patient visits steadily increased tallying up to over 1,000,000 outpatient visits per year and 30,000 inpatient admissions per year.

Founded by Chinese Academy of Sciences academician---Zhongcheng Wang, Neurosurgery Center of Tiantan Hospital has been recognized as the largest neurosurgical base in the world; just as Beijing Neurosurgical Institute has been considered as the first research institute of clinical medicine. Some organizations such as the Fifth Institutional Faculty of Clinical Medicine affiliated to the Capital Medical University, WHO Collaborating Center in China for Neural Science and Training, Beijing Neurosurgical college, the National Cerebrovascular Disease Prevention Research Office, the Beijing Cerebrovascular Disease Prevention Research Office and editorial offices of Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery and Chinese Journal of Stroke are located in the hospital. Tiantan hospital has 395 specialists including the world famous professors in neurosurgery like Zhongcheng Wang (Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and the winner of State Supreme Science and Technology Award), Yadu Zhao, Shiqi Luo and Jizong Zhao, and including senior experts in other subjects. There are 27 doctor degree mentors and 79 master degree mentors. Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neuroradiology are the national key disciplines. The hospital conducted many research projects at state level; at the same time, clinical research projects with neuroscience at the core received many National Science and Technology Progress Awards.

Full account of factors such as the development needs of hospital, Health Planning and the protection of the World Cultural Heritage, Municipal government has approved the hospital relocation project. New hospital is located at the South Fourth Ring Road, Fengtai District, near the Bridge of Huaxiang. The allocation of building land is more than 300 acres, with a total construction area of about 350,000 square meters. The financial fund is over 30 billion yuan, nearly four times as much as the old hospital. Construction of new hospital will be completed before 2015. There will be 1650 total beds, 200 intensive care beds, 63 full laminar flow operating rooms at the first stage in the new hospital with all kinds of departments and first-class equipments.

The removal and reestablishment is another great boost in development for Tiantan Hospital.
